Peter Tirschwell joined The Journal of Commerce in 1992 as a trade and transportation reporter in New York. In 1994 he moved to the San Francisco office as the paper's West Coast bureau chief. He returned to New York in 1997 as assistant managing editor. In March 1999 he was appointed editor-in-chief of The Journal of Commerce, the oldest business newspaper in the United States, founded in 1827 by Samuel F. B. Morse. Peter and his editorial staff oversaw the June 2000 debut of the weekly Journal of Commerce magazine and its companion daily breaking news website, JoC Online.

Currently, he serves as Vice President of the Company's Magazine Group as well as Editorial Director. The Magazine Division includes eight titles including such industry standards as The Journal of Commerce, Traffic World and Air Cargo World. In addition, he has been the driving force behind the very successful growth and development of the JoC Conferences which has grown from two events in 2001 to seven in 2006. In 2005, Peter spearheaded the launch of the group's first ever live teleconference.

Peter regularly speaks at various trade and transportation events and continues to write a weekly column for The Journal of Commerce. He received the 2000 Media Leadership Award from the National Cargo Security Council and currently serves on the board of the Seamen's Church Institute and the New York City 100 Year Association, and is an honorary member of the Marine Society of the City of New York.

Peter received an MBA degree from Fordham University and BA from the University of Maine.
